Amphotericin B exhibits high in vitro activity against many fungal species. Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides immitis, Candida species, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Rhodotorula, Cryptococcus neoformans, Sporothrix schenckii, Mucor mucedo and Aspergillus fumigatus are inhibited in vitro by amphotericin B concentrations of 0,03 to 1,0 μg/ml. Although Candida albicans is generally quite sensitive to amphotericin B, non-albicans species may be less sensitive. Pseudallescheria boydii and Fusarium sp. often resistant to amphotericin B. This antibiotic has no effect on bacteria, rickettsia and viruses.
